Owner: Stand Up For Animals (SUFA)
Location: Larry Hirsch Lane, Westerly, RI

Cherenzia provided civil and environmental engineering services to Stand Up for Animals (SUFA) in support of the permitting, design, and construction of their new Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.

SUFA constructed their new Animal Shelter and Adoption Center on a portion of the Town of Westerly former recycling drop-off area, which consisted of fill material associated with historical dumping and burning activities. Constructing a facility on this material required design changes and construction flexibility throughout the project. Major design challenges included balancing the site grades while minimizing disturbance to waste materials, and managing significant storm water volumes above the ground surface because excavation into the former landfill would have been cost prohibitive. Cherenzia provided the following services supporting the Town of Westerly:

  • Survey and site design
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic analyses
  • RIDEM Wetlands and Waste Management permitting and regulatory coordination
  • Stormwater conveyance system design
  • Construction documents
  • Construction oversight

“Working with Cherenzia & Associates is like working with a friend. Their team of professionals was always available for our Building Committee in conjunction with the General Contractor. Particularly when the project came to a standstill, Ray Cherenzia was the one who made a specific recommendation which allowed us to push the entire project forward. As the project was drawing to a close, the Cherenzia team was very attentive to time restrictions but assisted our group in being mindful of our non-profit financial constraints. As we think about the near-term plans for Stand Up For Animals, we will keep Cherenzia & Associates in the forefront of our mind as we move into Phase II of our project.” - Lori Harrison, Trustee, Stand Up For Animals
